Care, Experimentation, and Community in the MFA-IA Program

There’s something special about finding a graduate program dedicated to experimental interdisciplinary visual arts on the West Coast in an academic landscape where institutions are hard pressed to maintain an exclusive focus on these important studio practices or advocate for them within institutional shifts—as evidenced by the tumultuous journey of mergers like Mills College with Northeastern University[1] and San Francisco Art Institute (where I attended graduate school) with University of San Francisco.[2] Sierra Nevada University is slated to Merge with University of Nevada, Reno on July 1,[3] which will then house the MFA-IA program that strives to maintain its artist-led resolve even within the structures of accreditation and shifting departmental expectations involved in such mergers. Black Lives Matter

We hear the outcries from the streets, from homes, from workplaces, and from our own mouths. Black Lives Matter. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Christian Cooper, Rayshard Brooks, and the names and lives of countless others beyond these most recent months will remain in and on our hearts as we speak and act against the systemic and fatal injustices perpetrated against Black bodies.

Prometheus Tree

I have just returned from Wheeler Peak and Jeff Weiss’s Prometheus Tree dedication, “Remembrance 2.”  The drive across Nevada on 50 to Ely and the rendezvous with Jeff’s “Me and My Friends” at Ely’s Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall was full of tracings– the Great Basin’s complex usage issues.
