Scott Oliver

Scott Oliver’s diverse practice explores our entangled relationship with objects and materiality through, what he calls, “poetic repurposing.” His work has taken many forms including in-home sculptural interventions, a symbiotic restaurant, a collection of discarded LPs, an elaborate parlor game with students, and a multi-faceted public project including an audio walking tour, interpretive signs and souvenirs. Oliver often incorporates social exchange into his making process, and his background in design and woodworking are often evident in his work.

Oliver holds a BFA in Graphic Design and an MFA in Wood/Furniture from California College of the Arts. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at venues throughout the Bay Area and nationally, including Southern Exposure, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Triple Base, Johansson Projects, Mission 17, Rena Bransten Gallery, Museum of Craft and Folk Art, the deYoung Art Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Oakland Museum of California, San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Sonoma State Univeristy, Sierra Nevada College (Incline Village, NV), Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery (Portland, OR), and Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton, NJ).

Oliver has received a number of awards and grants for his work including an East Bay Fund for Artists Grant from the East Bay Community Foundation, an Investing in Artists Grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation, an Individual Artist Project Grant from the City of Oakland, and an Alternative Exposure Grant from Southern Exposure. He was an artist in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts in 2009 and at Recology in 2007. Oliver has taught in the sculpture departments at California College of the Arts and UC Berkeley. He is currently developing a project for Earthbound Moon in Rio del Oro, New Mexico outside Albuquerque. He lives and works in Fort Bragg, California with his wife and their son.
